Hawaii ist eine Inselkette und besteht aus insgesamt 137 Inseln. Allerdings sind davon nur acht bewohnt und sechs für Touristen zugänglich: Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Hawaii, Molokai und Lanai. Jede einzelne bietet unglaublich schöne Strände, Wanderungen, Aussichtspunkte, Wasserfälle und eine faszinierende Natur. Bevor man also nach Hawaii reist, sollte man sich Gedanken machen, welche Insel zu einem und seinen Reisewünschen passen könnte. Aus diesem Grund möchte ich einen kurzen Überblick über jede einzelne Insel geben, um die Auswahl zu erleichtern.
In total Hawaii consists of 137 islands thereof only 6 are accessible for tourists: Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Hawaii, Molokai and Lanai. And every island offers stunning beaches, great hikes and viewpoints, rising waterfalls and fascinating nature.
As your travel time may be limited, it can be hard to choose which island fits best for your travel plans. In this Hawaii island guide, I wanna give you a quick overview to make it easier for you.
Reisezeit / Travel time
Ich würde empfehlen, dass ein Trip nach Hawaii nicht kürzer als zwei Wochen sein darf, optimalerweise drei bis vier Wochen um mehrere Inseln zu bereisen. Hawaii ist zu jeder Jahreszeit empfehlenswert, da die Temperaturen durchgängig warm sind. Von April bis November allerdings wird es mit 24 bis 35 Grad noch einmal deutlich wärmer.
I would suggest not to plan less than 2 weeks for your trip, optimally 3 – 4 weeks to get the best out of it and to visit a couple of different islands. Hawaii is recommendable at any time of the year due to constant warm conditions. Nevertheless, from April to November once again it´s getting clearly hotter with temperatures between 24 till 35 degrees.
Oahu: Honolulu, Waikiki & Surfing
Diese Insel hat sich einen Namen gemacht, denn wer schon einmal etwas von Hawaii gehört hat, dem ist „Honolulu“ und „Waikiki“ kein Fremdwort. Auf dieser Insel leben nicht nur die meisten Hawaiianer (knapp eine Million), auch findet man hier die meisten Touristen. Viele internationale Touristen landen am Flughafen von Honolulu, der ebenso ein Ausgangspunkt für den Weiterflug zu den weiteren Inseln ist. Aber nicht umsonst ist Oahu so beliebt. Die Insel bietet neben dem berühmten „Waikiki beach“ weitere wunderschöne Strände, die sich zum Schwimmen, Surfen oder Schnorcheln absolut lohnen! Weitere Highlights sind der Botanische Garten; die Ostküste, die sich perfekt für einen Roadtrip eignet; viele einzigartige Aussichtspunkte und Wanderungen; und die etwas ruhigere North Shore.
The main island of Hawaii is best known for Honolulu and its famous Waikiki beach where you will find all the surfers. Oahu offers some hikes for amazing viewpoints, beaches for snorkeling and a botanical garden as in Jurassic Park! Around 1 million people are living here which is about 80% of all people living in Hawaii! Most of the international tourists land at the airport of Honolulu which is why most of the tourists can be found on Oahu and mainly in the Waikiki area where it can get really crowded. However, it is not for nothing that Oahu is much-loved. The island offers besides Waikiki beach other stunning beaches especially for surfing and snorkeling! Further highlights are the botanical garden; some amazing hikes with the best viewpoints I experienced in Hawaii and last but not least the east coast and the North Shore which are perfect for a road-trip-day.
Big Island: Black beaches, turtles and lava flows
Die größte unter ihnen allen: Hawai´in Big Island. Hauptsächlich bekannt für die Lavaströme und die pechschwarzen Strände mit vielen Riesenschildkröten. Die Insel eignet sich perfekt für einen langen Roadtrip mit Halt an unzähligen Wasserfällen, Taucherspots und als krönendem Abschluss die Lavaströme. Mauna Kea, ein inaktiver Vulkan, beheimatet zum einen das größte Observatorium der Welt aber bietet zum anderen auch die Möglichkeit den spektakulärsten Sonnenauf- oder untergang in Hawaii zu erleben in 4.205 Meter Höhe! Die Hotspots sind vor allem Kailua-Kona und Hilo, an denen sich viele Unterkünfte, Restaurants und Bars befinden.
The biggest island among all Hawaiian Islands is the Hawai’i Big Island. Mostly well-known for its lava flows and black beaches with its giant tortoises. The island is perfect for a road trip with many stops at countless waterfalls, black beaches and national parks where you can witness real flowing lava! Mauna Kea is an inactive volcano where you get the chance to experience the most spectacular sunrise or sunset in Hawaii in 4.205 meters! Furthermore, especially for snorkeling and diving, the Big Island offers many options! Hotspots are especially Kailua-Kona and Hilo, where you may find many accommodations, restaurants and shops.
Maui – The Honeymoon-Island
Maui ist bekannt für viele Traumstrände und wird daher oft als die Honey-Moon-Insel bezeichnet. Hier lag das Aloha -Feeling förmlich in der Luft! Für Surfer und alle die es einmal versuchen möchten, bietet diese Insel die perfekten Bedingungen. Bekannt ist zudem die Road to Hana: Durch den Regenwald führt sie vorbei an unzähligen Wasserfällen. Sehr berühmt ist außerdem der Haleakalā-Vulkan auf dem man in 3055 Metern Höhe den Sonnenaufgang über den Wolken bestaunen kann. Hotspot ist die kleine Stadt Lahaina.
Maui stands for dream beaches, thus it´s also called the Honeymoon Island! On Maui, you will experience the ALOHA feeling for sure. Everything is really relaxed. For surfers and everyone who wanna learn it, Maui offers the perfect conditions. Moreover, this dreamy island is popular as well for its Road to Hana where you will find waterfall beside waterfall in the rain forest. On the Haleakalā volcano, you get the chance in 3055 meters to marvel at the sunrise above the clouds. The hotspot is the town Lahaina.
Kauai - Jurassic park
Wer bei Hawaii direkt an Jurassic Park denkt, ist hier genau richtig. Denn genau hier wurde Jurassic Park unter anderem verfilmt und speziell die Napali Coast diente für viele Szenen als wichtiger Schauplatz. Über hunderte Meter ragen die bewachsenen Berghänge in die Luft. Zwar gibt es hier nicht sonderlich viele weitere Möglichkeiten anstatt die Natur zu bewundern und zu entschleunigen, doch das ist mehr als genug.
Whoever thinks right away about Jurassic Park when thinking about Hawaii, is perfectly right here. Many scenes were filmed right here and especially the Napali Coast was the main filming location. Hundreds of meters rise the vegetated mountains into the sky. Admittedly, there is not much more to do instead of admiring nature and slowing down – but this is more than enough.
Lanai – Luxus-Island
Lanai sei unter allen Inseln die Luxus-Insel, weshalb wir sie bei unserem Backpacker-Trip links liegen ließen. Eine sehr kleine, kaum bewohnte Insel, die neben einigen wenigen Luxusunterkünften, schönen Stränden und dem Aloha-Feeling nicht viel bietet. Viele Touristen besuchen die Insel nur für einen Tagestrip mit der Fähre von Maui.
Lanai shall be the most luxurious island among all Hawaiian Islands, wherefore we turned our back on this one. A tiny little island that is not much inhabited, but offers a few luxurious accommodations, beautiful beaches and for sure the Aloha-Feeling. Probably really good for a honeymoon as well. It is possible to visit the island on a day trip outcoming from Maui.
Molokai – Culture pure
Die oftmals unbekanntere Insel Molokai wird gerne unterschätzt, doch sie bietet hawaiianische Kultur vom feinsten. Die meisten Orte hier sind unberührt und versprechen einen entspannten Urlaub, ab vom Schuss.
Molokai is more unknown than the other islands and often underrated. However, this island offers Hawaiian culture at its best. Most of the places are pristine and promise a relaxing vacation off the beaten track.
