Aloha Hawaii! Hier begann für uns das Abenteuer Hawaii und es hätte nicht besser starten können! Oahu – das Herz von Hawaii -vollem hawaiianischen Charme. Am Flughafen von Honolulu beginnt für die meisten internationalen Toursiten die Reise, der ebenfalls der Ausgangspunkt für Weiterflüge auf die benachbarten Inseln ist. Und wer schon einmal etwas von Hawaii gehört hat, dem sind Honolulu und Waikiki beach keine Fremdwörter. Auch für uns begann unsere Reise direkt am Waikiki Beach, doch wir merkten schnell, dass Oahu so viele weitere, noch schönerer Orte zu bieten hatte. Unglaublich schöne Strände, bei denen die Kulisse einfach zum Träumen schön wahr: Ein heller Sandstrand, kühles Wasser mit einer sagenhaften Unterwasserwelt, bestückt mit Unmengen an Palmen und getoppt mit bewachsenen Bergen im Hintergrund. Oahu bot so einige Topkulissen.
Aloha Oahu! This is where our adventure ”Hawaii” began, and it couldn´t have started any better! Oahu – the heart of Hawaii - full of Hawaiian charm. The airport of Honolulu is for most of the international tourists the start of their journey and at the same time it´s where almost all connections flights to all other Hawaiian Islands depart. And if you have heard of Hawaii, you probably may have heard about Honolulu and Waikiki beach as well. Oahu is the place where this takes place. As well for us, Honolulu and Waikiki beach were the starting point of our trip. However, we realized fast enough that Oahu offers way more beautiful places. Stunning places, where the scenery was too beautiful to be true: A bright sandy beach, chilly water with a marvelous underwater world, armed with plenty of palm trees and topped with vegetated mountains in the background. Oahu provides so many breathtaking sceneries.
Honolulu & Waikiki Beach
Wie bereits erwähnt, sind diese beiden Orte nicht fremd für die meisten Reisenden. Waikiki Beach – der Inbegriff hawaiianischer Schönheit. Dachten wir! Denn leider trübt dieses Scheinbild und es ist uns Reisenden verschuldet, dass aus diesem ehemaligen Traumstrand ein Toursitenhotspot wurde. Ein vollbepackter Strand, von Hochhäusern umgeben und mit unzähligen Toursiten, die im Hawaiihemd ihren Urlaub genießen. Das sieht man allerdings auf kaum einem Bild im Internet. Doch das war auch schon die einzige Enttäuschung, die Oahu bot. Honolulu selbst, ist eine Großstadt, die so ziemlich alles bietet. Einmalig das Pearl Harbour Memorial, das an den Luftangriff des 2.Weltkriegs auf Hawaii erinnert. Und Waikiki Beach überzeugte mich auf eine andere Art: Hier lässt es sich entspannt einige Wellen surfen - mit Blick auf Diamond Head und der Sonnenuntergang kann auf dem Surfbrett auf offener See mit vielen weiteren Surfern genossen werden. Da blieb das Aloha – Feeling definitiv nicht aus!
As already mentioned, those both places won´t be strange for most of the travelers. Waikiki beach – a famous image of Hawaii. We thought! Because unfortunately the appearance is deceitful and it´s the fault of us tourists that this former dream beach became the absolute tourist magnet. Today it´s a crowded beach, surrounded by skyscrapers and endless of tourists walking around in Hawaiian shirts. Aloha Feeling? No chance. Still, this was the only disappointment Oahu provided. Firstly, Honolulu itself, is a big city that offers almost everything. Uniquely, the Pearl Harbour Memorial that reminds of the air attack of the second world war. Second, the Waikiki beach convinced me on a different level: It´s the perfect place for riding some waves with views on Diamond Head and Honolulu and to enjoy a sunset between many surfers while sitting on your surfboard on the open sea. Diamonds Head
Eine ca. einstündige Wanderung führt an den Rand eines Kraters, von dem aus man einen tollen Ausblick auf Honolulu, Waikiki Beach und die umliegenden Buchten hat.
A circa one-hour hike takes you to the edge of a crater, from where you will have a stunning overview over Honolulu, Waikiki beach and den surrounding bays.
Lanikai Pillbox Hike
Den absolut schönsten Ausblick auf meiner ganzen Hawaii–Reise erlebte ich hier! Eine kurze Wanderung führt einen hinauf auf einen Hügel, von dem aus man einen unvergleichlichen Ausblick auf das Meer, die Küste und im Rücken die Ko’olau mountains hat. Über diesen besonderen Ort berichte ich hier.

Ho´omaluhia Botanical Garden
Hawaii und Jurassic Park? Passt in Eurem Kopf genau so perfekt zusammen wie in meinem? Dann werdet ihr den Botanical Garden genauso lieben wie ich. Hunderte Arten von Pflanzen wachsen hier auf einem Fleck und im Hintergrund erstrecken sich die bewachsenen Ko’olau Berge in die Höhe. Eine Fotokulisse schlichtweg.
Hawaii and Jurassic Park? Fits in your head perfectly together as in mine? Then you will love the Botanical Garden too! A large variety of plants grow on 400 acres and with the Ko´olau mountains in the background it makes it such a unique and photogenic place!
Roadtrip Kamehameha Highway
Oahu eignet sich optimal für einen Roadtrip! Entlang der Küste fuhren wir mit unserem Jeep, offenen Fenstern, Roadtrip Musik in den Ohren und bestaunten die Natur, die sich entlang der Ostküste bis in den Norden zeigte. Vorbei kamen wir an verlassenen Stränden, kleinen Ortschaften und einer unglaublichen Landschaft. Hier erzähle ich euch über alle Geheimtipps, die wir sammelten.
Oahu is perfectly made for a road trip! We drove along the coast with our Jeep, opened windows, road trip music in our ears and gazed at the nature along the east coast up the North! Driving along hidden remoted beaches, small villages and an amazing scenery. Here I wanna pass on all of our secret hints we collected.
Favorite beaches
Oahu hat sie alle: Surfer-Strände, Schnorchel- Strände, Strände zum Entspannen und absolute Traumstrände. Einige davon haben sich bereits einen Namen gemacht, doch einige auf meiner Liste, erhielten wir auch aus erster Hand von den Einheimischen.
Oahu has them all! Beaches for surfing, beaches for snorkeling, beaches for relaxing and absolutely dreamy beaches. A few of them are already quite famous, but a few on my list are some first-hand secret spots of the locals!
