The day I went to Milford Sound marks one of my favorite ones on the South Island! I am still blown away by the beauty that nature offers here. Located on the west coast of the South Island, Milford Sound is about 2 hours away from Te Anau and about 4 hours from Queenstown.
However, do not rush to get to Milford Sound because the road itself offers some incredible places to see. For instance, the mirror lake where the water is so clear that it reflects the surrounded mountains. Or the Chasm, where you do a short walk into the rainforest to see the floodwater from the Cleddau River. Or visit some Lord of the rings film locations!
Der Tag an dem ich Milford Sound besuchte, gehört definitiv zu meinen schönsten Erinnerungen auf der Südinsel! Ich bin immer noch so begeistert, wie wunderschön dieser Ort ist. Etwa 2 Stunden von Te Anau und 4 Stunden von Queenstown liegt versteckt und völlig abgelegen diese 15 Kilometer lange Fjordstrecke.
Auf keinen Fall aber sollte man nur das Ziel vor Augen haben, denn allein der Weg bietet so viele schöne Dinge! Beispielsweise der „Mirror Lake“, in dem sich die umliegenden Berge glasklar spiegeln. Oder die Kluft, die nach einer kurzen Wanderung durch den Regenwald bestaunt werden kann. Oder unzählige Filmkulissen von `der Herr der Ringe´!
Nevertheless, after the great journey, the best journey is yet to come. Arrived, you can do a cruise through the fjords and these fjords will blow your mind! Because Milford Sound is only accessible by one road, it is such a secluded, calm place.
The fiord's cliffs rise up to 1600 meters from the water and waterfalls cascade downwards from hundreds of meters. While cruising along the water, you will feel really small. The highlight of the tour was that we spotted a whale right at the end of the fjord when it opens out onto the Tasman Sea! What a day!
Dennoch kommt das Beste zum Schluss. Angekommen, raubt diese Kulisse einem dem Atem. Per Boot oder Kayak kann die Fjordstrecke erkundet werden und zwischen den hundertmeter-hohen Bergen fühlt man sich unendlich klein. Fjorde bis zu 1600 Meter groß ragen aus dem Wasser, an denen Wasserfälle hunderte Meter hinabstürzen. Das Highlight an diesem Tag war neben dem Anblick dieser gigantischen Fjorde, der Wal den wir am Ende der Fjordstrecke entdeckten! Was für ein unvergesslicher Tag!
